Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology - Full Time
The two year Diploma course provides a maximum of technical knowledge while enabling students to develop their personal designing talents and abilities to the fullest extent possible. Thus individual initiative and creativity, independence of thought and vision and artistic judgement as well as communication and presentation skills are developed along with a thorough understanding of the broader fashion environment and the specific needs of various sections of the industry.
Class sizes are limited so lecturers can work closely with students in a personalised workshop atmosphere, and students visit a variety of fashion houses where they can meet and observe designers and entrepreneurs at work.

This course will be of benefit to those who want to be designers, manufacturers, couturiers and product developers and who wish to establish their own design company.
Course Content
On completion of all year one subjects the qualification of Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology is issued to students.
On completion of all year two subjects the qualification of Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology is issued to students.
Course Subjects
Pattern Making, grading and fitting (Australian Standard sizes) and construction of skirts, pants, shirts and jackets in calico. Completion of fifth scale pattern books. Fundamental sewing and garment construction skills, using industrial sewing machines.
Fashion illustration techniques. Perspective, proportion, working with different media, colour theory. Rapid sketching. Working from photographs. Trade sketching and specification drawing. Evaluation of own work. Preparation of a folio.
Drawing the human body through observation and analytical drawing procedures while sketching from a live model (clothed and nude). Rendering different fabrics realistically. Introduction to illustration using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
Principles of design. Particular looks, trends and directions. Sources of inspiration. Colour theory. Fabric characteristics and uses. Styling details. Specification drawing and trade sketching, storyboards, communication skills. Designing stories and ranges for specific markets ie ready to wear, street wear, bridal, evening wear or men's wear. Range planning and presentation. Trend forecasting.
Students will learn to create their own monochrome and multi-colour textile designs using a variety of manual techniques to print the designs onto fabric. Textile design principles. Selecting the appropriate fabric for a variety of designs and garment applications. Creating 2D artwork. Printing technology, silkscreening, paper stencils, photo stencils, using a carousel machine. Choosing the most suitable printing method. Printed fabrics will then be used for design/print projects in Fashion Design II.
This year will be a vital one in progressing from purely creative designing to designing with the customer in mind. Emphasis will be placed on developing an awareness of the demands of industry and the market place. This will be done by the students working in conjunction with lecturers from industry who will provide feedback and assessment of the students' work. Students will be required to apply research skills, develop designs, source fabrics and create sample garments, thus enabling students to improve their ability both as designers, makers of garments and managers of the design process.
Creating designs, specification sketches, storyboards, moodboards, textile motifs, placement prints, swing tags and logos using Fashion Matters' CM32, Capron Carter's Style CAD, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Pattern creation for complex garments, styles and designs. Grading and drafting of patterns using advanced techniques. Advanced fitting and measuring. Computer aided manufacturing using current software packages.
Draping techniques, working with toiles, tailoring, couture sewing and construction methods as used in bridal, evening wear and men's wear. Corsetry. Fitting, pressing, fabric handling. Grading, specification sheets, stitching technology and using a wide variety of specialist machines. Where applicable, projects will combine with those in Fashion Design II and Textile Printing and Design.
Assessment
- Completion of all assigments, set tasks and work experience punctually and to the required standard.
- Tests, presentations and examinations as required.
